Across industries, organizations are rapidly experimenting with artificial intelligence to drive business transformation. Yet despite growing enthusiasm, many AI initiatives fail to progress beyond the pilot phase. Industry studies suggest that more than half of AI projects are discontinued at the Proof of Concept (PoC) stage, never reaching full operational deployment.

This gap between experimentation and production reflects a broader challenge. While organizations increasingly recognize AI as a strategic capability, particularly with the rise of generative AI, many struggle to translate early experimentation into measurable business outcomes.

Despite these challenges, AI adoption is expected to accelerate significantly. According to multiple industry forecasts, approximately 85% of enterprises that have participated in the survey will be actively using AI in their operations by 2026. AI is rapidly evolving from a technology experiment into a core component of business strategy, shaping productivity, competitiveness, and decision-making across organizations.

However, the pace of AI adoption often exceeds the maturity of supporting frameworks such as data governance, operational readiness, and security management. As a result, many organizations initiate AI projects without the necessary foundations to scale them effectively. This gap frequently leads to stalled initiatives, unrealized value, and projects that fail to move beyond early experimentation.

What prevents organizations from successfully scaling their AI initiatives? And what capabilities are required to translate AI experimentation into sustainable business impact?

To better understand these challenges, Fasoo surveyed 200 IT professionals from both the private and public sectors, focusing on their experiences with AI initiatives and implementation challenges. This report examines the key factors behind unsuccessful AI projects and highlights practical considerations organizations should address to enable more effective and sustainable AI adoption.
